The turreted, elegant Fifth Maritime Republic of Noli is a jewel of the Western Riviera known worldwide; from here, the SS 1 Aurelia road, heading west, goes along the charming small beaches with crystal clear waters of Malpasso and the white cliffs of Capo Noli, loved by climbers. Go across the seaside village of Varigotti and the centre of Final Pia and Final Marina, then turn right on the SP 490 Colle del Melogno road that goes up to Finalborgo, noble capital of the Marquisate of Finale governed for centuries by the powerful Del Carretto family, after a journey of 21 minutes and 12 km from the starting point.
Then go back down on the SP 490 road towards the sea, down to the SS 1 Aurelia road which, going west, goes beyond Capo Caprazoppa and along a long beach up to Borgio, that is both an ancient village and a modern holiday resort. Via Nazario Sauro, full of hairpins, leads after 7 km and 15 minutes to the four “Saracen” villages of Verezzi, located on the hillside overlooking the bright Gulf of Loano, surrounded by sunlight, olives and drywall.
In total, about 19 km and 36 minutes.

Noli
One of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy
Noli, the fifth Maritime Republic.
“New Town”, Neapolis, as recalled by the original Greek name, a village founded by the Byzantines in the 6th century that fascinated illustrious historical figures including Dante Alighieri. For its wild territory, the village is mentioned in Dante’s Purgatory: “Vassi in San Leo e discendesi in Noli con essoipiè, ma qui convien ch’uom voli” (I went to San Leo and descended in Noli on foot with him, but here it is better for men to fly). Once the “Fifth Maritime Republic”, it is still a small trove of great cultural value, as told us by its old town. Discover its streets, admire the colourful Gothic building, the porch that served as shelter for boats, the city hall with its facade with mullioned windows and the many towers. Just outside the urban centre, other wonders, this time of Romanesque nature, such as the beautiful church of San Paragorio.
On top of the hill, surrounded by olive trees and the city walls, visit the ruins of the Del Carretto castle overseeing the village, then the coast and the sea up to the mountains of Tuscan Versilia, visible at the horizon during clear mornings. Here, the charm of the towers and ancient arcades is coupled with the smell of fresh fish sold by fishermen early in the morning by the waterfront. A tradition that is repeated every day and is then turned into special dishes together with local white wines such as Lumassina or Mataossu.
Now take the SS 1 Aurelia road towards the west, going along the crystal-clear water beaches of Malpasso and the white cliffs of Capo Noli loved by climbers; go across the seaside village of Varigotti and the centre of Final Pia and Final Marina then, going along the SP 490 Colle del Melogno road, arrive in Finalborgo after a journey of 21 minutes and 12 km from the starting point.

There are traditional craft shops, art galleries and bakeries along the pedestrian streets, where tourists from all around the world now wander. Start from the present and discover the ancient deeds beyond the walls, along the seventeenth-century Strada Beretta, that connected Finale with the Duchy of Milan. In a few minutes of walking you will reach Castel San Giovanni and, after a few hundred meters, enjoy the majestic ruins of Castel Gavone with the beautiful Torre dei Diamanti. Now set aside a few moments of peace and discover the small village of Perti Alto, with its Renaissance church of the five bell towers.

Verezzi
One of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy
Verezzi, Mediterranean villages.
From Finalborgo, take the SP 490 and then the SS 1 Aurelia roads that, proceeding westward along a wide beach, lead to Borgio. The bends of via Nazario Sauro will take you, after 7 km and 15 minutes on a hill overlooking the sea hosting four ancient villages, to one of the most beautiful corners of the Mediterranean.
The villages of Verezzi, Poggio, Piazza, Roccaro and Crosa have the same pink colour of the rock and are perhaps of Saracen origin. Enjoy the sunny nature surrounding them, where large carob trees, wild holm oaks and vines climbing the rows grow. The architectural profiles are just as rich in natural details: the walls of the stone houses are enlightened by the blue flowers of the campanula isophylla, famous among botanists because it only lives here. Highest than everything and everyone, the San Martino church and the old “Phoenician” mill are camouflaged in the Mediterranean scrub. In summer, Verezzi is filled with art and theatre lovers during the Theatre festival that brings to life the voices and lights of the charming Sant’Agostino square in the Piazza hamlet, while the summer sunset illuminates the sea and the Riviera coast behind the spectators.
And after the shows? A refined and rustic dish of snails ‘alla verezzina’ with a good glass of Lumassina white wine or of local, rare Barbarossa red wine, with its austere, intense and persistent aroma that recalls a withered rose.
