A long and unusual itinerary that begins from the Moneglia promenade, a marine and rural village, an almost hidden beach vacation jewel, and immediately faces one of the weirdest Ligurian roads: the SP 370. This is the “road of tunnels” that, in an alternate one-way, passes through the tunnels of the former one-track railway due north-west up to Riva Trigoso with its beaches and shipyards. From here, the SS 1 Aurelia road continues on due north-west touching the stylish town of Sestri Levante, running along the beaches of Cavi, entering the beautiful city of Lavagna and passing the Entella river before it enters the sea. Past the river there is Chiavari; then turn right following the stream along via Marconi. The road, changing a few names, finally becomes via Piacenza and then road SP 225, and it remains so until the end of the village of Carasco. On the right, the SP 586 road begins and then climbs the Sturla valley among woods, chestnut trees, cultivated fields and finally it crosses the rural and artisan villages of Mezzanego and Borzonasca. Upstream of the latest, the road winds through woods that let the traveller enjoy from time to time glimpses of the sea. At the Forcella pass, the panorama towards the sea, on the south, is vast and charming.

Continuing on, one enters the plateau of the upper Aveto valley, a landscape that is truly mountainous and that makes one forget very quickly about the sea and the Riviera. Grazing cattle, flowery meadows with purple crocuses, the flight of the birds of prey, the fragrance of the woods, mushrooms and creeks… the best of this part of the Apennines. We pass now through a few small villages and the main inhabited centre on the plateau, Rezzoaglio; right after, one enters on the right the SP 86 road that after an ascending path, turns left onto the SP 654 road which leads, after approximately 107 minutes and 67 km, to the main village of the mountain area: Santo Stefano dAveto. Going back to the sea is easy: just follow the same roads backward, passing Rezzoaglio and continuing on the SP 586 road up to Parazzuolo; on the right, enter road SP 56 that climbs up to the springs of the Aveto river among grazing animals and rural houses.

Once reached the Scoglina pass, take the SP 23 road which begins a steep descent “from sky to sea” touching the village of Favale di Malvaro and “landing” on the SP 225 road of Fontanabuona in Monleone di Cicagna. Follow it on the left for a brief stretch towards the sea, due south-east up to Pian dei Ratti, then turn right onto the SP 58 road that goes past Coreglia Ligure and climbs towards the ridges that face the Tigullio Gulf and the city of Rapallo.

A winding road will lead you back down among holm oaks, olive groves and small centres – once rural and now tourism destinations – to the end of the itinerary in Rapallo. In total, this trip is 3 hours and 19 minutes for a stretch 125 km long.

Moneglia

One of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy
Moneglia, the sea between the tunnels.

Sea, sun, great cuisine and relaxation live together in a colourful and hidden seaside village, renowned and appreciated worldwide. Moneglia appears on the sea, along the unique “road of tunnels”. Its origins are ancient, the village of Monilia (Jewels: maybe the fruits of the trees of its hills) existed already at the time of Emperor Augustus and at least since the year 1000 its hills were dotted by olive trees. Its charm is still as it was, like its historical centre, to be discovered by foot, from one end to the other of its central caruggio. Visitors can enjoy a moment of peace, discovering cosy atmospheres and works of sacred art in the beautiful churches of Santa Croce – with the cobbled parvis – and of San Giorgio, with a fascinating cloister. It is time to set off for some spectacular excursions: glimpses of coast and cliff side panoramas await you. The emotions will follow visitors even to the table: to be enjoyed are the green wild herb cake and a glass of white Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino DOC wine.

Now leave to face one of the most unique Ligurian roads: the SP 370 “road of tunnels” that in an alternate one-way goes through the tunnels of the former railroad up to Riva Trigoso. From here, the SS 1 Aurelia road continues towards north-west, goes past Sestri Levante, the beaches of Cavi, the city of Lavagna, the Entella river, and then finally into Chiavari; from here the SP 225 road enters the inland towards Carasco and the SP 586 road and follows the Sturla valley among the woods of Mezzanego and Borzonasca up to the panoramic Forcella pass. Proceeding on, one enters the plateau of Aveto in a mountain landscape with grazing cattle and the fragrance of the woods. Once past Rezzoaglio, the SP 86 road and SP 654 road lead, after approximately 107 minutes and 67 km, to the capital of the mountain area: Santo Stefano d’Aveto.

Santo Stefano d'Aveto

Santo Stefano d’Aveto, , mountainous Liguria.

After leaving from Moneglia and a path of approximately one hour and fifty minutes for 67 km, first by the sea and then more and more in the inland, you will reach the peaks of the Ligurian Apennines where Santo Stefano dAveto shines, the most mountainous municipality in the province of Genoa. Visitors will discover its elegant historical centre, with the paved streets and a castle that belonged to the Malaspina and then the Fieschi and Doria families. The surrounding landscape is an ode to the green in the summertime and the snowy white in the wintertime, where the Bue and Maggiorasca mountains are the protagonists (1799 m, the summit of the Ligurian Apennines), home of roe deer and wolves. For those who love winter sports, there are kilometres of trails for cross-country skiing and downhill skiing, thanks to the panoramic chairlift to Monte Bue. Visitors look up to the sky where surprises are never far: colourful hang-gliders admire the glacial lakes from above.

Awaiting is a special part of Liguria, with untouched nature between high cliffs, beech forests and flower meadows that open onto breath-taking views. On a clear day, the view extends from the top of the Maggiorasca to the Bue mount, from the sea to the Alps, up to the Tuscan Apennines. A spectacular scenery that appeals to all the senses, including taste: after practising sports activities and walks, it’s time to enjoy the tasty San Stè cheese, also great roasted in s’a ciappa with two slices of rustic bread, accompanied by a glass of Ciliegiolo Portofino-Golfo of Tigullio DOC wine.

Going back to the sea is easy: just follow the same roads backward, passing Rezzoaglio and continuing on the SP 586 road up to Parazzuolo; on the right enter the SP 56 road which climbs up to the springs of Aveto among grazing animals and rural houses. From the Scoglina pass, the SP 23 road begins a steep descent towards the SP 225 Fontanabuona road to be followed on the left for a brief stretch towards the sea due south-east, then it turns right on the SP 58 road that climbs up to Coreglia Ligure and towards the ridges that face the Tigullio Gulf; a descent among holm oaks and olive groves leads in a hour and a half and 58 km to the end of the itinerary in downtown Rapallo.
